Granya Pioneer Museum

This is the official website of Granya Pioneer Museum

The Granya Pioneer Museum was opened in 1998 after the closure of the Granya Primary School in 1994.

Locals who did not want to see the building and its history lost to the community joined together to research local history, gather photographs, newspaper articles, and historical records of many of the families who settled and made their homes in the district.

Historical photographs, land records and family histories have all been carefully preserved and placed on display.

The recently built extension contains horse drawn farming equipment, mining and blacksmith tools and other related artifacts of the area.

Earliest records of the district date back to 1836.

Resources available at the Museum include:

  • Land selection records,
  • Photographic and local history,
  • Granya Mining Register of claims book from 1891 to 1913. (This book has the name, date of claims and location)
  • Granya Post Office Directories from 1884 to 1900. (A list the names of residents and their occupations at that time)
  • Newspaper articles dating from 1885 - 1961. (Among these are magisterial inquests into deaths in the area)
